Torture Garden at MassReview: Event

Friday was possibly the last ever Torture Garden event at Mass, with the venue's future as a nightclub looking uncertain after it was sold last week. TG have already confirmed a return to the Colosseum next month, so there's no need to panic... but for those of us with tickets to Friday's party, the news gave us one more reason to party just a little bit harder.

We had a few problems on the door, as one of our party was judged 'borderline' for dress-code, and my ticket seemed to have gone missing! Our thanks to the member of the door team who decided to let us all in together (fairy and all!) and to the nice lady who gave me a ticket to get in and said to ring TG in the week and sort the mess out then :)

Due to the hot weather, TG had got twice as many fans as usual to try and cool down the dancefloor and lounge areas, which was much appreciated. However, the dancefloor music seemed to me to suffer from the same problem as the last Club Flesh I went to, with overly fussy drums being prominent in a lot of the stuff played, instead of the stomping hard house that TG is well known for. It's not like it was bad music, just not much fun to dance to.

There was one excellent set in the middle of the night by a bare-chested female DJ, who I think made a brief comeback for the last twenty minutes or so of the night as well, judging by the way the music picked up then (again an excellent dancefloor kicks in just at the end of the night - I swear it's a deliberate tease!!)

This was the first time I'd seen the dungeon area at Mass since DMC started supplying the equipment, and it's pretty impressive even to someone who doesn't play. The atmosphere in the dungeon is a lot more pleasant now as well, with room for people to watch others playing without crowding them in the process.

The general-access dark / chill-out room seemed to be fairly popular, with something sexual going on in there more often than not - although there was also room to just sit down and chill out in the front half of this room. The couple's room was fairly well used too, and the door was being quite strictly monitored through the night to make sure it stayed couples only.

If this was farewell to Mass, then I think people said 'goodbye' in the style it deserved - but personally I think that the Colosseum (if TG does end up there regularly) will prove to be an even better venue as soon as they settle in. I'll be there next month, hoping for a bouncier dancefloor and the usual selection of beautiful people in fantastic outfits...
